Addressing Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour
A homeowner in Shellharbour encountered a pressing issue with water ingress that was rapidly worsening. Rainwater from two neighbouring properties, located at a higher elevation, began to flow into the yard and seep beneath the foundation of the house. This unwelcome infiltration caused damage to the flooring, encouraged rising damp, and resulted in mould growth within the property, jeopardising the integrity of recent renovations.

How Can You Pinpoint the Cause of Water Ingress?
The issue originated from both surface runoff and subsurface water flowing downhill from the rear and side yards of adjacent properties. Without an effective drainage system to intercept this water, the excess was forced to flow beneath the house.
Implementing a Comprehensive Drainage Solution
CS Plumbing devised and installed a gravity-fed French drain system designed specifically to capture and redirect water before it could compromise the foundation of the home.
The project encompassed several critical components:
- A French drain system meticulously crafted to gather surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, directing it through gravity to a concrete pit.
- A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, featuring strategically drilled holes to ensure effective water discharge.
- Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes replacing the original smaller pipes, connected to new 100mm PVC piping leading to the curb.
- A retaining wall system constructed along the boundary, utilising concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled using an excavator to create a robust barrier that holds back the adjacent yard.
- Efficient soil removal conducted on-site, facilitated by a dumper for streamlined site management.
What Measures Can You Implement for Efficient Water Management?
The newly installed drainage system now effectively captures both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring that it is diverted away from the home. This solution offers the homeowner a durable, low-maintenance option that protects their foundation, flooring, and the investment made in renovations.
